What garage storage actually costs

Tier one: get it off the floor

Metal pegboard on one wall, a few shelf brackets, and standardized bins. This is a few hundred dollars and it solves the actual problem most garages have, which is that everything is on the floor.

It is not a compromise tier. Wall Control’s metal pegboard is the best-documented product in this whole category, steel rather than plastic, and normalizes to about 56 lb per square foot into studs — more than Gladiator’s GearWall. A pegboard wall plus open shelving genuinely organizes a two-car garage.

What you do not get: doors, a finished look, or lockable storage.

Tier two: the real project

A wall system on the main wall, a run of cabinets, an overhead rack, and a bench. Low thousands, and this is where most people who search for garage storage end up.

The proportions are worth knowing before you allocate. Cabinets take the largest share by a distance. The wall system is usually second. The overhead rack is the cheapest square footage in the entire project, which is why it is the single best value item in this tier — 32 square feet of storage for a fraction of what the same area of cabinet costs.

Tier three: the finished garage

Welded cabinets across two or more walls, worktops, a full wall system, multiple overhead racks, flooring. Five figures, and it is a renovation rather than a purchase.

What the money buys over tier two is largely finish and permanence: welded rather than flat-pack, matched runs rather than assembled pieces, worktops, consistent color. Those are real things and worth paying for if the garage is a space you spend time in. They are not capability — a tier-two garage stores just as much.

The line items that show up late

Where the money is genuinely well spent

1. The overhead rack. Cheapest storage per square foot in the garage, on space nothing else competes for.
2. A thick bench top. The part you touch every time, and the part cheap benches remove. See top materials.
3. Enough wall accessories. A wall system with too few hooks is an expensive blank wall.
4. Standardized bins, bought before the shelving. They determine the shelf depth you need.

Where it is not

1. Capacity headroom you will never use. A 300 lb/sq ft wall panel holding a leaf blower is money spent on a number.
2. Cabinets for things that want shelves. You are paying several times over for a door that boxed items do not need — see cabinets vs shelving.
3. Matching finishes across an unfinished garage. Worth it in tier three, invisible in tier one.

Before spending anything, the question underneath all of it is worth asking honestly: are garage cabinets worth it for your garage? Sometimes the answer is no.
