How the picks are made, what we do instead of testing, and where the method runs out.

How we pick

The short version

Everyone in this category writes as though they have handled every product. We have not handled any of them, and we say so.

What we do instead is read each manufacturer’s published spec sheet and install document, convert the load ratings into a single unit so the brands can actually be compared, and print what every rating assumes about load distance and fasteners — which, for most of them, turns out to be nothing at all.

That work needs no test rig and, as far as we can find, nobody else in this category has published it. It is also entirely checkable: every figure on this site links to the manufacturer page it came from, so you can read the same document we read and tell us if we got it wrong.

How a pick is made, step by step

  1. Gather every manufacturer’s published document for the products in the category — product pages, FAQs, spec sheets and install manuals. Install manuals are the most useful source in this category, because a document that has to tell you how to fit something cannot avoid stating fasteners and spacing.
  2. Record the figure and its provenance together. Every number on this site carries the source it came from and the date it was read. If a manufacturer does not publish something, we record the absence rather than filling it in.
  3. Normalize the units. This category publishes load ratings in at least four different units — per square foot, per linear foot, per panel and per cabinet. We convert them into one and show the arithmetic so you can check it.
  4. Record what the rating assumes. Load distance and fastening method. Where a manufacturer publishes them, we print them. Where it does not, the page says “not published” — which is a finding, not a formatting choice.
  5. Rank against the buyer’s actual job, then against disclosure. A product with a slightly lower rating that tells you what the rating means will beat a higher one that does not, because you can design around the first and only hope with the second.
  6. Name the one we would skip. Every ranked page carries an entry we would not buy and the specific reason. A list where every item is a winner is a catalog.

What our numbers are, and are not

Every capacity, dimension, gauge and material figure on this site comes from the manufacturer’s own published document and is linked. We currently cite 18 distinct manufacturer documents across 23 products.

Where manufacturers rate differently — and in this category they rate very differently — we say so rather than flattening it into a false comparison. The clearest example is on the capacity page: storeWALL publishes what its panels hold four inches out from the wall, and nobody else does. We do not silently assume the others behave the same way; we show that the question is unanswered for them.

Load ratings in this category are published per square foot, per linear foot, per panel and per cabinet — across products a buyer chooses between in one afternoon. Converting them is most of what this site does.

Where this method runs out

It is worth being specific about its limits, because a method with no stated limits is marketing.

  • Published figures can be wrong or optimistic. We are reporting what manufacturers claim, accurately. We cannot verify the claim itself.
  • We cannot assess build quality, finish or fit. Whether a drawer runs smoothly, whether a door stays aligned, whether the powder coat chips — those need the product in front of you, and we do not have it.
  • We cannot tell you about long-term durability. Nobody can, from documents. Where a warranty length is published we report it, because it is the manufacturer’s own estimate of service life and it is the closest proxy available.
  • Absent figures stay absent. If Gladiator does not publish a steel gauge, we do not estimate one from a photograph. The page says it is not published.

How prices work

Prices are not currently shown anywhere on this site, and that is a deliberate consequence of the same rule.

Our price layer reads live figures from Amazon and stamps them with the date they were checked, disappearing anything older than 48 hours. That feed is not yet active for this site, so rather than print a number we remember from somewhere, every buy button reads “Check price on Amazon” and takes you to the current listing. When the feed comes online the prices will appear date-stamped. Until then there is no number on this site that could be stale, because there is no number.

How we make money

Amazon Associates, tracking tag steelslat-20. Links route through a redirect on this domain so we can count clicks. If you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Commission never changes a ranking. The specific commitment behind that sentence: we recommend products we earn nothing on when they are the right answer. Right now 4 of the products compared on this site cannot be bought through us at all — Husky and Kobalt are store exclusives, and Trusscore sells only samples through our one affiliate channel. They are in the comparisons anyway, sometimes as the value pick, because a comparison that omits the cheapest credible option to protect a commission is worthless to the person reading it.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, or a manufacturer has revised a published rating, tell us and we will check it against the source document and correct the page. Specs change and we would rather hear it from you than leave it wrong.
