What this site is

Steel Slat compares garage cabinets, slatwall, overhead racks and workbenches using each manufacturer’s own published figures — converted into the same units, with what every rating assumes stated next to it.

It exists because of one specific problem. Try comparing two garage wall systems on capacity and you will find the numbers are published in different units, with no statement of what they assume, by companies selling the product. Gladiator rates one of its own wall products per square foot and another per linear foot, on adjacent pages. Proslat and Trusscore both publish “75 lb per square foot” and neither says what that means. storeWALL publishes what its panels hold four inches out from the wall, and it is the only manufacturer in the category that does.

None of that requires a test lab to sort out. It requires reading the documents and doing the conversion. So that is what this site does.

Who writes it

Scooter M.. I got interested in garage storage the way most people do: the garage filled up and I wanted it back. What I found was a category where almost every load rating is published by the company selling the panel, in whatever unit makes it look best, with no statement of what the number assumes. One brand rates a wall panel per square foot and its own rail per linear foot, on the same page. So I started converting them into a common unit and writing down what each rating leaves out. That arithmetic is the whole site, and anyone reading it can check my work against the manufacturer documents I link.

What we deliberately do not do

• We do not claim to have tested anything. No implied trials, no claim of having handled a product, no lab. Units we claim to have tested: zero.
• We do not invent numbers. If a manufacturer does not publish a steel gauge, the page says it is not published rather than estimating one.
• We do not show prices we cannot verify. Every buy button reads “check price” and goes to the live listing. There is no remembered number anywhere on this site.
• We do not omit products we cannot sell you. 4 of the 23 products compared here have no buy button at all, and some of them are the value pick.
• We do not link affiliate programs we have not joined. Amazon is the only one, which is why several genuinely good store-brand products appear here with no link.
• We do not publish reviews, ratings or testimonials of ourselves. This site is days old. It has no reviews, and it is not going to invent any.
