Published ratings run from 50 lb per square foot (Gladiator GearWall) to 300 lb per square foot (storeWALL Heavy Duty). The number only means something with two qualifiers: how far out from the wall the load sits, and what the panel is fastened to. storeWALL is the only manufacturer that publishes the first — its 300 lb at the panel face becomes 165 lb four inches out. Partly because the panels genuinely differ, and partly because they publish in four different units. Gladiator rates GearWall per square foot and GearTrack per linear foot on adjacent pages; Wall Control rates per panel. Converted into one unit, GearTrack works out at roughly 150 lb per square foot — three times the GearWall panel sold beside it.

Every serious rating in this category assumes it. Proslat specifies 1-1/2 inch #8 pan head screws into studs at 16 inch spacing. Wall Control publishes the cost of not doing it: 200 lb per panel into studs against 100 lb into drywall anchors, a 2x difference from the fastening alone.

Yes, but almost no published rating applies, because nearly all of them assume wood studs. On masonry the fastener becomes the limiting factor, and solid poured concrete, sound block webbing and hollow block cores all behave differently. No. Pegboard hooks locate in a round hole on a grid and hook the back face of the board; slatwall accessories engage a continuous profiled groove. Neither geometry can locate in the other, in either direction.

For hand tools, metal pegboard is hard to beat: cheaper, steel rather than plastic, and Wall Control publishes per-hook limits so you can plan. Slatwall wins when you are hanging awkward widths and want hooks anywhere along a run, and it carries far more where the panels are rated for it. The three-way comparison.

Far less than the panel rating, because a shelf puts the load out away from the wall. storeWALL publishes the effect directly: its Heavy Duty panel drops from 300 lb at the panel face to 165 lb at four inches out, and Standard Duty from 250 lb to 115 lb. Where only one number is published, read it as the flat-against-the-wall figure.

Thicker is better and the scale runs backwards — 20 gauge is thicker than 24. Most consumer garage cabinets are 24 gauge for the carcass, with better ranges stepping shelves up to 20. The harder problem is that several major brands publish no gauge at all, which makes a construction comparison against them impossible rather than merely unfavorable.

They are different trades. Welded cabinets arrive square and stay square with no assembly to get wrong, but are heavy and may not fit the route into a finished garage. Flat-pack is far easier to get into place and cheaper to ship, but the final squareness is your work.

18 inches suits hand tools, consumables and paint. 24 inches is what you need for power tools with a workshop footprint — a miter saw will not close behind an 18 inch door. Measure the deepest item you plan to store, then check the deeper cabinet still leaves room for a car door to open.

Wall cabinets are typically hung with about 18 inches of clearance above a worktop, which keeps the surface usable and the cabinet within reach. With no worktop below, hang the bottom around 54 inches from the floor so the shelf inside sits at chest height rather than overhead.

The common 4x8 racks are rated 600 lb, and the rating assumes a specific ceiling. SafeRacks specifies joists of at least 2x6 nominal lumber no more than 24 inches apart, with 2 inches of lag penetration into each. In a ceiling that does not meet the specification, the published capacity does not apply.

SafeRacks publishes minimum 2x6 nominal lumber, maximum 24 inch spacing, at least 2 inches of lag penetration, and a 3/16 inch pilot hole drilled 3 inches deep. For truss-framed ceilings a 2x4 bottom chord is accepted. It states explicitly that the racks must not be installed into I-beams, steel joists or concrete ceilings.

Measure from the ceiling to the underside of the door when it is fully open before choosing a rack. A sectional door travels back along the ceiling and its track needs clearance. SafeRacks adjusts from 12 to 45 inches of drop and FLEXIMOUNTS from 22 to 40.

34 to 36 inches for general standing work, which puts the surface just below your relaxed wrist. Higher — 38 to 42 — for close or seated precision work; lower — 30 to 32 — for heavy work where you need bodyweight over the job. An adjustable bench covers all three.

Solid wood at 1.5 inches or thicker. It absorbs impact, takes a bolted-on vise, can be clamped through, and can be sanded flat again years later. Thin laminate and MDF tops dish where you work and cannot be resurfaced.

PVC, without much argument. MDF absorbs moisture and in an unheated garage the slots swell until accessories bind. Every garage-specific system we compared uses PVC rather than MDF, which is itself the answer — MDF slatwall is a retail store-fixture product.

The tiers are wide. Pegboard and shelf brackets will organize a two-car garage for a few hundred dollars. If you use the garage as a workspace, or if the floor is currently the storage system, yes — cabinets convert unusable floor into usable wall. If you park in it and store a handful of boxes, shelving and a pegboard wall do the same job for a fraction of the money.
