The top is the part of a workbench you interact with every single time, and it is where manufacturers remove cost when they need to hit a price. Between two benches at the same money, the thicker top is almost always the better buy.

Solid wood: the default, and the right one

Seville publishes 1.5 inch solid polyurethane-coated wood on its UltraHD adjustable bench, and that specification is close to ideal for a garage. It is thick enough to bolt a vise through, absorbs hammer blows rather than transmitting them, and can be sanded flat again after a decade of abuse.

Wood also has a property the harder materials do not: it is sacrificial in a useful way. You can drill into it, screw a jig to it, cut on it. A top you are afraid to mark is a top you work around.

Thickness is what matters most. Under about 1.25 inches, clamping and vise mounting both get marginal. Over about 2 inches you are buying weight you do not need.

Steel: durable, and loud

Steel tops do not dent, do not burn, and do not care about solvents. For mechanical work involving hot parts and spilled fluids they are excellent and will outlast the rest of the bench.

The trade-offs are real though. Steel is loud — everything you put down announces itself. It marks anything you rest on it that you cared about. And you cannot drill into it, screw a jig to it, or cut on it, which removes a lot of the casual usefulness of a bench top.

A common and sensible arrangement is a wooden bench with a steel sheet you put down for dirty or hot work and lift off afterwards.

Laminate and MDF: what to avoid

Bare MDF is fine as a sacrificial layer — a cheap sheet on top of a real bench that you replace when it gets destroyed. It is not fine as the bench top itself in a garage, for the same moisture reason MDF slatwall fails there.

If you are building your own

Two sheets of 3/4 inch plywood glued and screwed together give you a 1.5 inch top for a fraction of the cost of a bought one, and it is genuinely good — stable, thick enough for a vise, and replaceable one sheet at a time. Add a hardboard sacrificial layer on top if you want to protect it.

Seal the edges, whatever you build from. Garage humidity gets into end grain and edges first, and a sealed edge is the difference between a top that lasts and one that swells. Full detail in build versus buy.

What is the best material for a workbench top?

Solid wood at 1.5 inches or thicker. It takes a bolted-on vise, can be clamped through, absorbs impact, and can be sanded flat again years later. Steel is better for hot and dirty mechanical work but cannot be drilled, cut on, or screwed to.

How thick should a workbench top be?

At least 1.25 inches, and 1.5 is the practical sweet spot — the figure Seville publishes for its UltraHD bench. Below that, clamping and vise mounting get marginal. Above about 2 inches you are paying for weight you will not use.

Is a laminate workbench top any good?

Not in a garage. Laminate over particleboard chips at any impact, and the board beneath swells irreversibly once water reaches a chipped edge. You cannot clamp to it reliably and a vise will pull through it.

Can you make a workbench top from plywood?
