Why the three numbers differ
It is about where your force comes from and where your eyes need to be.
Working heights by task. These are ergonomic ranges rather than manufacturer specifications, and they scale with your own height.

The failure of a bench that is too low is your back. The failure of a bench that is too high is your shoulders, and it is the one people notice later because it does not hurt immediately — it just makes an hour of work feel like two.
Finding your own number
The ranges above are for an average-height adult. If you are notably taller or shorter, scale them:
- Stand up straight with your arms hanging relaxed at your sides.
- Have someone measure from the floor to your wrist crease.
- Subtract 2 to 3 inches. That is your general-purpose bench height.
- Add 4 to 6 inches for precision work; subtract 4 for heavy work.
Two things that change the answer
A thick top raises the surface. If you are building a bench, the 1.5 inch top sits on top of the frame — so the frame has to be built 1.5 inches lower than your target working height. This is the single commonest mistake in DIY bench building and it is not fixable afterwards without cutting the legs.
A vise changes what “the work surface” means. If most of your work happens in a vise rather than on the top, the height that matters is the top of the vise jaws, not the bench. That is typically 3 to 4 inches above the bench surface, so the bench itself wants to be correspondingly lower.
When adjustable is worth paying for
