An adjustable bench is a specific purchase. You buy one because a fixed bench lands at one height and you work at it whether it suits you or not, or because a bench has to match cabinets that are already in place. So the adjustment range is the reason to buy, and the capacity is the reason to buy this one. Both are published by the two benches that lead this page, and neither is published by the third.

How this was judged

Capacity first, because it is the number that separates a bench from a table. Then the adjustment range in inches, and whether the maker states the increment, because a range you cannot set precisely does not match a cabinet top. Then the top — area and thickness — because a 3,000 lb rating on a small top and a 2,000 lb rating on a large one are not as far apart as the headline suggests. Last, how you buy it.

Read the capacity and the top together. Gladiator publishes half again the Seville figure on a top with about two-thirds the area, which means the gap in pounds per square inch of surface is wider still. But a bench is not loaded per square inch — it is loaded with a vise and a job — and either figure is far beyond what any garage bench sees. The capacity decides the ranking; the top decides which bench you can actually work on.

The range is the product

Both leading benches cover roughly the same span: a low end around 28 inches, which is seated work at a stool, and a high end around 41 or 42, which is standing assembly for a tall person. Seville states one-inch increments; Gladiator does not state the step. If the bench has to land exactly on a cabinet top, the stated increment is worth something — and both benches are a two-person job to adjust once loaded, so set the height on day one, with a straightedge across the cabinets, and leave it.

Two things to weigh. The warranty, per the retail listing, is one year on the top and lifetime limited on the frame and legs; Gladiator’s own page does not state it. And 48 by 25 inches is a small surface for a garage that does more than one job at a time — a 3,000 lb rating is not much use on a top a miter saw fills.
