Shelving is the cheapest thing in this category and, unusually, the best documented. Where cabinet brands publish a per-unit figure and go quiet, and wall systems publish four incompatible units between them, shelving manufacturers mostly publish two clean numbers: what a shelf holds and what the unit holds. That should make this the easiest buying decision on the site.
It is not, because of one habit. The number on the box is the total: 8,000 lb, 5,000 lb, 4,000 lb, 3,000 lb. Totals are almost always stated for weight distributed evenly across every shelf, and nobody loads a garage evenly. The engine hoist, the floor jack and the case of oil go on one shelf, usually the bottom one. So the operative figure is per shelf, and the gap between the two framings is where the disappointment lives.

Two rows in that table decide the ranking. The first is the top one: 2,000 lb per shelf is not a marginal lead, it is five times the highest cabinet shelf figure anywhere on this site and twice the next unit down. The second is the last one, where the per-shelf column is empty — and an empty cell in that column, on a product whose entire job is holding weight on shelves, is a finding rather than an oversight.
The caster trap
Here is the thing almost nobody reads to the bottom of the spec sheet to find. Seville publishes its UltraDurable shelving at 800 lb per shelf and 4,000 lb total on the leveling feet. On the casters the same unit is published at 500 lb total.

This is not a criticism of Seville. It is the opposite: Seville is the only manufacturer on this page that publishes the caster figure at all, and the physics are the same for every rolling shelf unit ever made. Casters concentrate the entire load onto four small bearings and a swivel, and the swivel is always the weak point. The brands that do not publish a caster rating have the same problem and simply leave you to discover it.

Two thousand pounds per shelf and 8,000 lb per unit, on a welded steel frame with metal shelves, at a price bracket below most of the cabinets on this site. If your problem is weight rather than tidiness — fluids, wheels and tires, masonry, batteries, anything that has been slowly destroying a plastic shelf — this is the answer and it is not close.
The honest limits: 18 inches of depth is shallow for large totes and for a mounted tire, and Gladiator publishes no steel gauge here any more than it does on its cabinets. There is also no load distance stated, so the 2,000 lb figure assumes an evenly loaded shelf rather than a point load in the middle of a span. Put heavy narrow items over the uprights.

The trade here is depth for strength, and for most garages it is the right trade. Twenty-four inches deep takes a standard tote front-to-back where an 18 inch shelf leaves it hanging over the edge, and five shelves in the same 72 inch height means more usable levels for boxed storage.
You give up half the per-shelf rating and the metal shelves — these are laminate. A thousand pounds a shelf is still four times any cabinet shelf here, so the downgrade only matters if you were genuinely going to put half a ton on one level. Six inches of extra depth, on the other hand, is six inches of garage floor gone, which is the real cost.

The only shelving unit here that publishes what happens when you put it on its wheels: 4,000 lb total on the leveling feet, 500 lb total on the casters. That is an eight-fold collapse, published by the manufacturer, and almost nobody reads far enough down the page to find it.

The best-documented unit on the page and the one to buy if the garage is damp, dusty, or doubles as somewhere you store anything you would rather not have sitting in still air. Wire shelves do not trap water or dust, the unit is NSF-certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 2 for dry environments, and it carries a limited 10-year warranty.
Two caveats, both published by Seville rather than discovered. The caster figure above is the big one. The smaller one is that wire shelves drop small parts through the grid, so budget for liners if the shelves are going to hold fasteners, sockets or anything else that fits between the wires.

This is the unit that sells more than any other on this page, and the one we cannot rank. The published figure is 3,000 lb for the whole rack with weight distributed evenly across five shelves. Divide it and you get 600 lb a shelf — but that division is ours, it assumes perfectly even loading, and the shelves are particleboard rather than steel.
Particleboard under a point load does not fail the way steel does. It sags, slowly, and then it delaminates if the garage is at all damp. For light bulky storage in a dry garage it is perfectly adequate and it is the cheapest way to get five levels off the floor. For anything heavy it is the wrong product, and the missing per-shelf figure is why it cannot be recommended above the three units ahead of it.
What decides it for most garages
- The load is heavy - shelving out-rates every cabinet on this site
- You want to see what you own without opening doors
- The budget is small: shelving is the cheapest storage per pound held
- The floor is uneven, since every unit here has leveling feet
- Dust, fumes or damp would reach the contents - use a cabinet
- The garage is shared and things need locking away
- The wall is the only space left - see wall-mounted shelving instead
- The items are long and thin, which suits a rail or a wall system
Depth is the decision people get wrong most often. Eighteen inches suits boxed consumables and hand tools; 24 inches is what totes, wheels and bulk paper goods actually need, and it costs you half a foot of a garage that probably does not have half a foot spare. Tape it out on the floor and walk past it before you order — the same advice this site gives about cabinets, for the same reason.
