Best storage for a small garage

In a small garage the specification that matters is depth. Most listings publish it, and almost nobody reads it.

Short answer
In a small garage, rank storage by published depth rather than capacity. A 12.2 inch wall cabinet costs half the clearance of a 24 inch floor cabinet and still publishes 120 lb a shelf. Pegboard costs under an inch of depth and publishes 200 lb a panel into studs. A folding bench gives the floor back when the car arrives.

A small garage is not a storage problem, it is a clearance problem. The car has a fixed width, the door opening has a fixed width, and what is left is the budget you get to spend on storage. Every inch a cabinet sticks out from the wall is an inch off the space between the wall and the car door you have to open while standing in it.

Which makes depth the specification to shop on, and depth is the one number nearly every listing in this category publishes. The five products below run from under an inch to 23.6 inches, and the difference between the shallow end and the deep end is roughly two feet of garage.

How this was judged

Four criteria, decided before anything was ranked, in this order.

First: published depth. Not estimated, published. Every product here states it, and they range from a 20-gauge pegboard panel sitting nearly flat to a folding bench at 23.6 inches.

Second: does it use the floor? In a one-car garage the floor is the thing you are trying to keep. Wall-hung storage costs you nothing on the slab; a floor cabinet costs its full depth whether it is full or empty.

Third: capacity for that depth. Shallow is only useful if it still holds something. A 12.2 inch cabinet publishing 120 lb a shelf is a better trade than a 10 inch shelf publishing nothing.

Fourth: can it be undone? Small garages are often rented, or shared, or about to be re-planned. Products that come off the wall leaving a few screw holes rank above ones that need a wall system committed to first.

Published figures read from each maker's page or retail listing. Depth is the projection from the wall face.

11.8 in

The difference in published depth between the shallowest steel wall cabinet here (VEVOR, 12.2 in) and a standard 24 inch garage base cabinet - per wall, per run. On both long walls of a single-car garage that is nearly two feet of clearance recovered, which is the difference between opening a car door and turning sideways to get past.

Not slatwall at all, and the most honestly documented product in this entire comparison. Wall Control publishes two capacities for two mounting methods — 100 lb per panel into drywall anchors, 200 lb into studs — plus per-hook and per-shelf limits and a written caveat about what the numbers assume. Everyone else should be doing this.

What the rating assumes
Load distance:
not stated by the manufacturer, so treat the figure as a flat-against-the-wall number
Fastening:
Into studs; 100 lb per panel with drywall anchors instead

Wall Control states the assumption in writing: 'properly installed panels, weight relatively evenly distributed across the panel face, as well as weight situated at the base of each hook or shelf as opposed to the tip.' Per-hook limits are published too: 10-15 lb for a hook engaging two slots, 5-10 lb for one slot.

What is good
  • Publishes a different rating for drywall anchors and for studs — nobody else does
  • Publishes per-hook, per-shelf and per-bin limits as well as per-panel
  • Steel, so a dropped tool does not gouge it the way it gouges PVC
What is not
  • Rated per panel, so comparing it to slatwall needs arithmetic (we do it)
  • Hooks engage slots rather than a continuous groove, so placement is less free

A 16 by 32 inch, 20-gauge steel panel that publishes 200 lb per panel into studs — and 100 lb if you use drywall anchors instead, which is the most useful single disclosure in this whole category. It projects barely past its own mounting flange, so it is the cheapest possible way to make a wall work in a garage where depth is rationed.

Hooks are extra, the published per-hook figures are small (5 to 15 lb depending on the hook), and pegboard suits hand tools rather than boxes or bulk. A panel wall also takes planning to look deliberate rather than piecemeal, which matters more in a small space than a large one.

Four adjustable levels inside a 30 inch cube of cold-rolled steel, at 120 lb per shelf, on a rail-mount back. The most storage per dollar here - and, like almost everything in this category, silent on what the whole cabinet weighs when those four levels are full.

What the rating assumes
Load distance:
not stated by the manufacturer, so treat the figure as a flat-against-the-wall number
Fastening:
Per shelf; rail-mount back panel, wall type and fastener not stated

Published as up to 120 lb per shelf across four adjustable levels. No figure is published for the cabinet as a whole.

What is good
  • Four adjustable levels, more than any other cabinet here
  • 120 lb per shelf published
  • 30 inches tall and wide, on a 12 inch depth that suits a narrow garage
  • Rail-mount back panel and a cable port through the base
What is not
  • No capacity published for the cabinet as a whole
  • Nothing published about the fastener or the wall behind it
  • 12 inches deep, the shallowest cabinet on this page
  • Steel named but no gauge published

Twelve point two inches deep, 30 inches square, four adjustable levels and a published 120 lb per shelf on cold-rolled steel. That is real enclosed storage for consumables and hardware at half the projection of a conventional garage cabinet, and it locks.

Twelve inches will not take paint cans two deep or a large tool case, and nothing is published about the fastener or the wall behind the rail-mount back panel. No total is published for the cabinet either, only the per-shelf figure.

The largest published capacity of any wall cabinet here - 300 lb total, evenly distributed - on solid steel with stainless doors, at half the price of the Gladiator. What it does not publish is a per-shelf figure, and it has no shelf to speak of: it is one 16 inch deep compartment.

What the rating assumes
Load distance:
not stated by the manufacturer, so treat the figure as a flat-against-the-wall number

What is good
  • 300 lb total published, the largest figure of any wall cabinet here
  • Solid steel with stainless doors, a magnetic latch and a keyed lock
  • 18 inches deep, the deepest cabinet on this page
  • Stacks with the rest of the UltraHD range
What is not
  • No per-shelf figure published, and no adjustable shelf inside
  • One 16 inch tall compartment, so tall items go in on their side
  • Nothing published about the fastener or the wall it needs
  • Stock has been intermittent on this model

Three hundred pounds published for the cabinet, evenly distributed, behind stainless doors with a keyed lock, at 30 inches wide and 18 deep. In a small garage that is where the chemicals, the blades and the things visitors should not reach go — off the floor, out of sight, locked.

Eighteen inches is deep for a small garage wall, so it wants the passenger side or above a bench. There is no adjustable shelf inside, so tall items go in sideways, and nothing is published about anchoring it.

Sixty-six pounds a hanger on a 150 degree swivel, and the only bike mount here whose listing tells you in capitals not to fix it to plasterboard without a stud behind it. That sentence is the product.

What the rating assumes
Load distance:
not stated by the manufacturer, so treat the figure as a flat-against-the-wall number
Fastening:
Per hanger; screws supplied for concrete, masonry or stud walls, and the listing warns against unsupported drywall

Published as holding up to 30 kg / 66.2 lb per mount. The listing explicitly instructs buyers not to install on plasterboard or drywall unless a wooden stud is behind it.

What is good
  • States the wall requirement, in the strongest terms of any listing here
  • 150 degree swivel stores the bike flush or angled around a parked car
  • Rubber-coated cradle protects the rim and spokes
  • 66 lb per hanger covers most non-electric bikes
What is not
  • Tires wider than 3.54 inches do not fit - fat bikes are out
  • 66 lb is short of many e-bikes once a battery is on board
  • Vertical storage needs ceiling height most garages have, but not all
  • Priced per pair, so a family of bikes adds up

Bikes are the worst offenders in a small garage: long, dirty and impossible to stack. A hanger that swivels 150 degrees stores the bike flush to the wall and lets you angle it out only when you need it, which is exactly the trick a narrow bay needs. Published at 66 lb a hanger.

Tires over 3.54 inches will not fit, 66 lb is short of many e-bikes, and vertical hanging needs ceiling height a low garage may not have. The listing is emphatic that plasterboard without a stud behind it is not an acceptable wall, which in a small garage limits where the bike can go.

The only bench here that folds away, with a full-size metal pegboard above the top. Published at 1,000 lb, and like everything on this page it does not say whether that holds with the frame rolling on four swivel casters.

What the rating assumes

not stated by the manufacturer, so treat the figure as a flat-against-the-wall number

What is good
  • Folds to reduce its footprint when it is not in use
  • Full-size metal pegboard above the work surface
  • Four swivel casters, two of them locking
  • A bounded 1,000 lb figure
What is not
  • A folding frame is a hinge, and hinges are where a bench flexes
  • No height adjustment
  • Top thickness and species not published
  • Priced above every other bench here except the Seville, with no drawers

A 47 inch bench with a published 1,000 lb capacity and a metal pegboard above it, that folds when the car needs the space. In a one-car garage that is the only honest way to have a workbench at all: the bench exists on Saturday and disappears on Monday.

Folded or not it is 23.6 inches deep in use, the deepest thing here. The listing does not say whether the 1,000 lb applies on the casters, a folding frame has a hinge where a fixed bench has a weld, and it sits in a high price bracket for a bench with no drawers.

Go shallow and wall-hung when
  • The car door has to open between the wall and the car
  • You are renting and want it off the wall with a screwdriver
  • The stored items are hardware, hand tools and consumables
  • The floor needs to stay sweepable and clear
Take the depth when
  • The wall is the passenger side and nobody walks there
  • You store bulky, deep things - bins, cases, camping gear
  • You want a work surface, which needs depth to be useful
  • The garage is a workshop first and a parking space second

The order of operations in a small garage is the same as any other garage, just less forgiving: decide what has to stay reachable, put the rest up high or behind doors, and plan the wall before you drill it. The layout sequence is in laying out a garage wall, the cheapest route to each kind of storage is in garage storage on a budget, and if the ceiling is the only space left, best overhead garage racks covers what can go above the car.

Questions

Common questions

How do you store things in a small garage?

Spend depth, not money. Put anything that can live on a wall on a wall, keep the floor for the car and the things that genuinely need floor, and choose products by their published depth: a 12.2 inch wall cabinet and a 24 inch floor cabinet differ by nearly a foot of clearance on every wall they occupy.

How deep should garage cabinets be in a small garage?

As shallow as the contents allow. Twelve inches takes hardware, consumables and hand tools; 18 inches takes most boxes and bulk; 24 inches is a full base cabinet and is hard to justify on the driver’s side of a single-car garage. Standard depths and what fits in them are set out in standard garage cabinet dimensions.

Is pegboard or shelving better for a small garage?

Pegboard for anything you can hang, shelving for anything in a box. Wall Control publishes 200 lb per 16 x 32 inch panel into studs, which is a lot of hand tools for effectively no depth. Shelving earns its depth only when what you are storing genuinely needs a flat surface.

Can you have a workbench in a one-car garage?

Yes, if it folds or rolls. A fixed bench at 24 inches deep permanently spends the clearance you need to get out of the car; a folding bench spends it only while you are using it. The mobile and folding options are ranked in best rolling workbench.

Where should bikes go in a small garage?

On the wall, vertically, on a swivel hanger that lets the bike sit flush when it is not in use — or on the ceiling if the walls are full. The trade-offs, and the published capacities of both kinds, are in best garage bike storage.
