The catch is that published specification depth varies a great deal between models in the range. Some listings carry a gauge and a capacity; others carry neither. That is worth more than a spec sheet, and it is the compensating advantage of buying in a store.

Kobalt — Lowe’s

Lowe’s answer to Husky, and much the same story: competitive in-store pricing, frequently discounted alongside Kobalt tool storage, and thinly specified on paper. If you are already committed to a Lowe’s purchase, it belongs on your list; we cannot price-check it for you and we would be guessing if we tried.

The warehouse clubs

Costco and the other clubs periodically carry garage cabinet sets, often from national manufacturers under a club SKU, and the pricing on those can be genuinely excellent. Two cautions worth knowing before you rely on it:

• Availability is seasonal and regional. A club set is not something you can plan a project around six months out.
• Club SKUs are not always identical to the retail product. Configuration, and sometimes construction, can differ from the manufacturer’s catalog version of the same name. Check the actual specification on the club listing rather than assuming it matches the review you read elsewhere.

Where the national brands are genuinely better

The honest recommendation

If price is the binding constraint, buy the store brand. Go and look at it first, push on it, open the doors. You will get more linear feet of steel for the money than any national brand will give you, and for storing boxes, paint and garden equipment that is a completely reasonable outcome.

If you want to know what you are buying, buy NewAge. The published 24-gauge welded construction and 200 lb shelves are things you can actually check a claim against, and there is no store-brand equivalent of that transparency.
