Short answer
Steel carries far more — published shelf ratings of 75 to 250 lb — and takes impact without deforming. Resin cannot rust and shrugs off spilled chemicals and standing water. Buy steel for tools and weight; buy resin for a damp garage storing garden chemicals, and for nothing else.

Where steel wins, and by how much

Capacity, decisively. The published steel figures on this site run from 55 lb per shelf (Gladiator’s modular wall cabinet) to 250 lb (NewAge Bold XL base shelves). Resin cabinet manufacturers generally publish considerably lower numbers where they publish them at all, and the failure mode is different in a way that matters: steel deflects and stays deflected, while a loaded plastic shelf creeps — it sags progressively over months under a constant load, and does not recover.

Impact. A dropped socket dents steel. Dropped onto a cold resin door in an unheated garage, the same socket can crack it, because most of these plastics get brittle as the temperature falls. If the garage goes below freezing regularly, that is a real consideration rather than a theoretical one.

Wall mounting. Steel cabinets can be hung on a wall and bolted to studs. Resin cabinets are almost always freestanding, which means they occupy floor — the one thing a garage storage project is usually trying to reclaim.

Where resin genuinely wins

It cannot rust, and it does not care what you spill in it. That is not a small advantage in the specific case it applies to. A garage that floods at the door in heavy rain, a coastal garage with salt air, or a cabinet dedicated to fertilizer, pool chemicals and solvents — those are the conditions that eat a powder-coated steel cabinet from the inside out, starting at any scratch that reaches bare metal.

Resin is also lighter to move, needs no assembly skill, and typically costs less per cabinet. If the job is “somewhere to put the weed killer and the hose fittings”, it does that job perfectly well and steel is overkill.

  • You want the cabinet wall-mounted to reclaim floor space
  • The garage gets cold enough for plastics to go brittle

  • The garage floods, or the air is salty

  • You want something you can move on your own next year
  • Budget is tight and the load is light

The combination most garages actually want

Steel for the main run, and one resin cabinet for the chemicals. That is not a compromise, it is matching the material to the contents: the things that would rust a steel cabinet from the inside are exactly the things worth isolating anyway, and the things that would break a resin shelf are exactly what the steel run is for.

Will metal garage cabinets rust?
