How to cut slatwall panels
Different materials, different blades. The one that chips is the one most people buy.
Slatwall is easy to cut and easy to ruin, and the failure is always the same: chipping along the slot edges, which is exactly where the panel is most visible and most structurally relevant. Coarse blades and too much speed cause it.
Blade by material
General shop practice for these materials. Always check the manufacturer's own instructions for the panel you bought — this is not a substitute for them.

Why PVC chips, and how to stop it
A coarse blade with few, large teeth removes material in big bites. In plywood that is fine. In PVC the material is brittle enough at the slot edge that a large bite tears rather than cuts, and you get a ragged white edge along the exact feature that hooks engage.
Four things fix it, in order of how much difference they make:
- More teeth. 60 to 80 on a 7-1/4 inch circular blade. The single biggest factor.
- Support under the cut line. Panel flexing away from the blade is what turns a clean cut into a torn one. A sacrificial sheet underneath solves it.
- Face direction. Circular saw teeth cut upward on the exit side, so the good face goes up. Table saw teeth cut downward, so the good face goes down.
- Moderate feed speed. Pushing hard generates heat, and PVC that melts rather than cuts leaves a re-welded burr.
Cutting around outlets and openings
Most garage walls have an outlet, a light switch or a hose bib somewhere in the panel field. Measure the opening from two fixed references — typically the last fixed panel edge and the level line — rather than from the floor or the ceiling, both of which lie.
Transfer the measurement to the panel, drill a starter hole inside the waste, and cut out with a jigsaw using a fine-tooth blade. Cut the opening slightly generous: an outlet cover plate hides a few millimeters of gap and nothing hides a cut that went too far.
Finishing the cut edge
A cut end that will be visible wants trim over it; most systems sell edge and corner trims for exactly this and they are worth the money. Where trim is not going on, a light pass with fine abrasive knocks off the burr. Do not try to melt or flame-polish a PVC edge — it distorts the slot profile next to it and the accessory will no longer sit right.
